History is the study of the past as it is described in written documents. Herodotus, a 5th century BC Greek historian is considered as the” Father of History”. According to sir Francis Bacon, History makes men wise. The study of history has sometimes been classified as part of the humanities and at other times as part of the social sciences. Studying history is important because it allows us to understand our past, which in turn allows to understand our present. Generally, History is the subject of all.

History helps us to understand people and societies. A study of history is essential for good citizenship. History helps us to solve the problems through the past incidents. It is like archives which has all kind of revolutions, achievements, rise of civilizations and its decline etc.

About The Department

Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi in the Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu, India, is a co-educational college started in 1947 by Vallal Dr. Alagappa with the motive of providing education to the underdeveloped areas in and around Karaikudi. The department of History started in the beginning of the college itself. It is proud to say that the department of History emerged in the emergence of independence of India. In 2003, it became a Post Graduate department. The Government of Tamil Nadu offered the research programmes like M.Phil., and Ph.D. in 2013 for the welfare of the students.

Since its establishment, this department produced thousands of graduates. They are employed in various departments like schools, colleges, civil service, police and railway departments. The department of History frequently conducts the seminars and workshops to enrich the student community. The department provides the LCD and Power point facilities to the staffs for effecting teaching. Department also arranges educational tour programmes for the benefit of the students in related to the cultural history with the permission of the directorate of collegiate education. The Alagappa Government Arts college have Career and Guidance cell to give assistance to face the competitive examinations. This Department also trains the students to write these exams and provide adequate materials for preparation. For the benefit of the students, the department conducts the special lectures in various topics.

The Professors of this department work hard for the progress of the slow learners. They also conduct remedial classes for the poor students especially in language subjects. So, the students of this department perform well in the university examinations.
