Department of Physics

Physics makes significant contributions through advances in new technologies that arise from theoretical break troughs. Advances in understanding of electromagnetism or nuclear physics led directly to the development of new products that have dramatically transformed modern day society such as television, computers, domestic applications and nuclear weappens.Advances in thermodynamics led to the development of industrialization and advances in mechanics inspired the development of calculus. Optics is the study of light is concerned not only with visible light but also with infrared and ultraviolet radiation which exhibit all of the phenomenon of visible light except visibility. eg.reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, dispersion and polarization. Thermodynamics deals with the relation between heat and other form energy. Electricity and magnetism have been studied as a single branch of physics. An electric current gives rise to magnetic field induces and changing amagnetic field induces current. Electrostatitics deals with electric charges at rest. Atomic physics studies the electron shell of atoms. Molecular physics deals on multi atomic structures and their internal and external interactions with matter of light.

About the Department

The Alagappa Government Arts College Karaikudi ,Tamilnadu was founded in 1947, the year of independence by the great philanthropist late Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar. The objective of providing higher education to the poor and backward students. The college offering U.G programme in Physics from the starting time 1948 with a sanctioned strength of 40. P.G programme of Physics was started by the year 1998 with a sanctioned strength of 25. During the academic year 2011 - 2012 Ph.D and M.Phil Physics programe was started. Now the department of physics runs with 14 sanctioned regular staff members and 6 full time guest lectures. Nowadays more than 50 M.Phil and 7 Ph.D students were produced by the staff members in the department of physics. So many papers were published in the reputed journals. Number of conferences, seminars, workshops and refersher courses were attended by the staff members. Many of the staff members of this department were acted as a resource persons in various national/international conferences. Many of the students studied in this department were placed in government jobs in state and central government and attained very good positions in abroad. Every year many of our U.G, P.G and M.Phil students were got medals, ranks in the university examinations. Also well qualified, experienced and dedicated staff members are working in this department is another milestone.
